The Great Hunt…

31 Saturday Mar 2012

Wow!  Sorry for the absence… didn’t mean to take so much time off.
I’ve decided to refocus this blog back to my original idea… quality, not quantity.  It become more of a “job” than a hobby.  I’d prefer it to be a hobby… less pressure that way.
Anyway… onto today’s post!
This morning, our church, Discovery, held it’s 17th annual Easter Egg Hunt.  This was (obviously) our first experience with this event and it’s MASSIVE!!  We were recruited to be greeters and hand out maps and registration cards.  We had the best time!  Here are some pictures from the morning…

Connor really didn’t want his picture taken with the Easter Bunny…
 …but I insisted!
Snow White was there, too… I didn’t even ask Connor if he wanted a picture with her!

Until next time…

Rob’s Rhetoric…

Why Pray?

The truth is we are not capable of making it through life’s trouble on our own strength and wisdom.   We constantly need help and we need it every day. Prayer is how we invite God to be involved in our daily decisions. Prayer is the way we worship God and thank Him for all the blessings we enjoy each day.  Prayer is a supernatural way to encourage others and ourselves.  Prayer is how we tap into the power of God to change our circumstances. Prayer is how we connect our knowledge of God’s Word with our faith in God.  Prayer is the spiritual glue that continually cements and strengthens our relationship with God.

James 1:5-8, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.  But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.  Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”
Secular Americans depend on intelligence, education, reason, logic and personal interest to make decisions. Christians should be motivated by the love of Christ, the truth of God’s Word and the voice of the Holy Spirit prompting us to move in a certain direction.  I am not advocating that Christians abandon secular thinking but every decision we make should be filtered through the truth of God’s word and laid before Him during our prayer time each day. When in doubt, appeal to the knowledge of God’s Word over your own logic.  When in doubt trust God with your decisions and the leave the consequences to Him.  The greatest request we can make is to ask God for His help.  God created us in His own image and His love for us is too overwhelming to comprehend.
Jeremiah 29:11-13, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
God uses adversity in life to mold the character of Christ into our hearts and minds.  How can we make sense of emotional pain, rejection, and failure?  You cannot unless you have a relationship with Jesus Christ.  Only God can fill your life with Joy, meaning and contentment.  Only God can take something that was meant for evil and turn it around for your good.  Trust and obey God.  Then we can expect Him to move in our lives when we ask Him for help.

Who Comes Up With This Stuff?…

It’s March 20th…
the first official Day of Spring.
Do you know what else today is?

“National Snowman Burning Day”!

That’s a little scary!

According to the party planning website Punchbowl.com, “today is the nationwide festival to mark the end of winter and welcome springtime.  This holiday is modeled after Germany’s Rose Sunday Festival where the mayor of each town burns a straw snowman if the children of the town were well behaved that year.”

If it’s based on children’s behavior, I’m not necessarily sure if we could do this at our house.  (Just kidding, Connor’s a great kid and for the most part pretty well-behaved!)

“Some believe that the rising smoke from the fire is supposed to ward off blizzards and usher in spring-like weather.”

I don’t think we need to do this here in Oklahoma since we really haven’t had any kind of winter this year, except for one Monday with a micro-meter of snow.

“The first Snowman Burning Day was celebrated in 1971 at Lake Superior State University.  This tradition has continued to take place year after year at the university with students, faculty, staff, retirees, and townspeople who all attend and participate.”

Happy National Snowman Burning Day!

Bring on Spring!
Until next time…

Road Trip…

…down the Talimena National Scenic Bypass.
This past Saturday, we had to take Connor to meet up with his dad in Ft. Smith.  He’ll be gone this entire week for Spring Break.  BOOOO!
On the way back from Ft. Smith, Rob, Macy and I decided to take the scenic route… literally!

First, and completely by accident, we stopped here in Heavener…

Heavener Runestone Park & Historic Site… supposedly Vikings (yes, Vikings) somehow made their way to this spot in Oklahoma, set up camp and carved letters and words into the side of a giant rock.  You have to climb down a man made staircase to get to the building encasing the rock.  You can see the building in the picture below, right by Rob’s head.

Now, here is a picture of the carvings.  The stone is encased in glass, so it’s kind of hard to see. Look above my copyright…

Some experts believe that the inscription on the stone could be interpreted to read “Glomesdal” or “Valley of Glome.” Glome, they theorized, was a viking explorer who claimed the little ravine as his own centuries ago.
Here’s a close up…

Whether or not these were actually carved by Vikings is highly debated.

Heavener Runestone Park & Historic Site is located atop Poteau Mountain in the edge of the Ouachita Mountains that stretch across the Arkansas – Oklahoma border.

In addition to the runestone itself, the park features nature trails, a paved sidewalk that leads down through the ravine to a shelter protecting the carving, picnic areas and beautiful wet weather waterfalls.

Now… to the rest of our long trip home…
This is just one of the many views along the Talimena National Scenic Byway or OK-1.  It spans parts of Oklahoma into Arkansas… going through the Ouachita National Forest.  From end to end, the bypass is only 54 miles long, but we took our time to enjoy it.
We got on the bypass kind of in the middle of the route at Heavener  There are many places to stop along the way west to Oklahoma City… including this beautiful spot.

This is Emerald Vista… the picture just doesn’t do it justice.

There are more than 20 designated stops along the bypass where you can stop your vehicle, get out and enjoy the vista views… like this…

This is the Panoramic Vista.  It was super gorgeous!
And…

obviously super windy!

For more on the bypass, click HERE.

The western start to the Talimena Naitonal Scenic Bypass is roughly 3 ½ hours from home.  Hopefully we can go back with Connor so he can experience it.  I’m sure it is absolutely gorgeous during fall with the leaves changing colors!

Until next time…

It’s the Luck of the Irish…

16 Friday Mar 2012

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day… it’s not only the day we pinch our friends for not wearing green, it’s a day with lots of history behind it.
According to History.com, “Saint Patrick, who lived in the fifth century, is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland.  Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16.  He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people.  In the centuries following Patrick’s death (believed to have been on March 17, 461), the mythology surrounding his life became ever more ingrained in the Irish culture.  Perhaps the most well known legend is that he explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock.”

Why do we wear green on St. Patrick’s Day? According to the Christian Science Monitor, St. Patrick’s revelers back in the early 1700s thought wearing green made a person invisible to leprechauns, fairy creatures who would pinch anyone they could see (anyone NOT wearing green).

So… be sure and wear green tomorrow, lest you get pinched by those sneaky leprechauns!

Until next time…
