I haven’t done a DIY project in a little while… so I thought it was time!
Here is a before picture and a little background.

Way back in 1997, my grandfather purchased me this master bedroom suite.  I have always cherished it because it came from the greatest man that ever walked the face of this earth and who has been rejoicing with Jesus in heaven since May of 2003.  I actually have a lot of the furniture and keepsakes that belonged to “Mamps”, including his 1940’s dining room set, a decorative foyer table and my mother’s bedroom furniture.

I would keep the bedroom suite forever, and plan to with the other pieces in the set, but the bed needs to go.  It was perfect until we got Macy, and now Rossi.  They like to do this on the footboard…

…which has led to this…

Also, Macy sleeps with/between Rob and me every night.  This is a queen sized bed… its not big enough for the three of us.  Someone, usually me, ends up with about 3 inches of mattress to sleep on and zero covers.  And, when we watch movies or television as a family, we all pile up in our bed, leaving very little room for 3 people and two dogs to lounge comfortably.

So… we’re getting a new, bigger bed!

I’ve already ordered this…

… and this…

…to replicate this…

Keep in mind, we’re not quite this “shabby chic”, so the paint colors will be different.  It will still look slightly distressed, but not as dramatic as the one pictured above.  We were going to look for a vintage door, but I fell in love with a new one at the local building supply store.  It’s perfectly symmetrical and smooth, so we won’t have to do anything to it before we paint it.   And, it didn’t cost a lot, which is always a plus!

I’m super excited to have a shelf across the top of the bed.  A place for books and pictures and lamps and somewhere for Rob to put his glasses at night instead of on the window sill.

Rob has already figured out how we’re going to attach the headboard to the wall, now we’re working on the actual shelf part.  We’ll probably have to enlist the help of some friends that own a nail gun and know how to work with crown molding.

We haven’t even started looking at king-sized mattresses, yet.  Don’t even know where to begin!  Any suggestions?

Just in case you didn’t notice…
…NO footboard!  So, no more of this…

…therefore, no more of this…

…Woo Hoo!

The frame is scheduled to arrive this Friday and the door should be here in a couple weeks.  Thankfully, the bedframe is adjustable, so we don’t have to get the new, fancy, king-sized mattress just yet.   Apparently, those are super expensive… we may have to wait until the tax refund for that purchase!

Once everything is in place, including the mattress, a new comforter will be on my shopping list.  The one we currently have (inexpensive quilt from Wal-Mart) has seen better days!  We haven’t had it very long, but with two rambunctious bull terriers, it wore out pretty quickly!

I can’t wait until the project is complete!  It’s totally going to add some character to our otherwise slightly bland master bedroom!

Stay tuned!

Until next time…
