Pictures of the Day…

I made it to Arkansas! Only took about 6 hours and I’m extremely exhausted. I took this first picture at my favorite gas station at the half way point near the Arkansas border.

I typically stop here to use the restroom and purchase a snack size can of Original Pringles and a drink. I bought a Starbucks Double Shot or something like that for the first time today… it was awful! I will never buy one of those again!

I finally made it to Mom and Dad’s around 4 this afternoon. A little while later, a couple of high school friends and their two precious daughters showed up with these…20140228-222733.jpg

These are The Pioneer Woman’s cinnamon rolls and they are the most delicious I’ve ever tasted! Ree Drummond would be very proud! My friends are baking and selling them as a fundraiser with their church. They are working with Living Water International to purchase and install a water well in Honduras. My friend is going to travel there to help. It’s such an awesome mission!

The Marathon Expo is tomorrow and Mom and I have many fun things on the agenda!

Until next time…Happy Blogging!

OFTR…

Instead of an OOTD post, otherwise known as “Outfit Of The Day”, I’m doing an OFTR post, “Outfit For The Race”.

Due to the possibility of precipitation falling from the sky on Sunday morning in downtown Little Rock, I have two outfits ready to go.

The theme of this year’s race is “Epic”…LRlogo…and racers are encouraged to wear superhero costumes. Batgirl was the inspiration for this first outfit.
imageMask: Grim Reapers//Batgirl shirt with cape: eBay//Running skirt: Skirt Sports//Calf compression sleeves: Zensah//Socks: Wrightsock Stride//Running shoes: Asics Gel Kayano 20

I’ve never actually worn a costume for a race before. I’ve worn crazy skirts or funky socks, but never a full on costume with a mask. Even if it doesn’t rain, I doubt I’ll wear the mask. I wore it for Halloween, so I feel like I got my money’s worth.

Here is my raining outfit with two shirt options…
image
Hat: Gift//Shirt 1: Nike (similar)//Shirt 2: RUseeN// Running skirt: same as above//Compression Sleeves: same as above//Socks: same as above//Running shoes: same as above

There’s only a slight difference. I’ll be wearing a poncho, too if it rains, but I haven’t purchased that yet.

Since it’s Thursday, and I haven’t done a “Throwback Thursday” post in a while, here’s a look back at some of my past Half Marathon outfits.

2013

I don’t have one for 2012. That was the year I raced in OKC. My family was still asleep when I left for the race, so I don’t have a picture of my outfit.

Well, I better get packing…tomorrow morning will be here before I know it and I have a 6 hour drive ahead of me, but I’m excited!

Until next time…Happy Blogging!

Rain, Rain, Go Away…

26 Wednesday Feb 2014

Right now the weather is forecasted to be rainy and 49 degrees for the Little Rock Half Marathon on Sunday. The one and only time I did the half in OKC (back in 2012), it rained. It was terrible… the crappy weather, the unfamiliar course, no family waiting at the finish line… I hated every minute of it. Maybe if I had been more prepared for the uncontrollable rainy conditions, the experience wouldn’t have been so bad.

Graphic

I did a ton of research and came up with this list of tips for those facing a race in the rain:

1. Make sure to have a set of dry clothes, socks, shoes, etc. waiting on you at the finish line. The last thing you want is to stop running, cool down and be wet. BRRRR!
2. Don’t wear cotton. When cotton clothing gets wet, it gets heavy and takes forever to dry. Wear moisture/sweat-wicking, lightweight fabrics. Also, wear short sleeves and shorts… your bare skin dries quicker than any clothing will.
3. Apply Body Glide or even Vaseline to your bare feet prior to the race to aid in preventing blisters, also wear light-weight socks…your feet will get wet. Thinner fabrics dry quicker.
4. Use Body Glide or some other kind of runner’s lubricant on other parts of your body to prevent chaffing from the extra moisture.
5. Wear a ball cap with a bill or a visor… it will help prevent rain from getting in your face.
6. Wear a thin poncho. It may be cumbersome, but you’ll be glad you have it. It’s convenient to tuck into your belt strap (if you wear a belt) and if the weather clears up, it’s not much of a loss to toss it to the roadside and leave it behind. But, if you’re running in Little Rock this Sunday morning, don’t toss that poncho prematurely, it’s Arkansas…you never know what the weather is going to do!
7. This is probably one of those “duh” things, but… be sure and protect your electronic devices from moisture by putting your phone. iPod or other music player in a plastic baggie. Also, wear water-proof headphones, running the cord down your shirt to keep it from getting too wet.
8. Stay indoors or under a covered area to stay dry for as long as possible prior to race time.
9. Bring newspapers to the race…once you’ve crossed the finish line, stuff your shoes with them to dry them out. You don’t want stinky shoes!
10. Have fun! From what I’ve read, a lot of runners love running in the rain and some have even accomplished Personal Records… maybe they’re in such a hurry to get out of the precipitation!  I doubt that will be me, but I’m going to put forth my best effort!

See you at the finish line!

Until next time…Happy Blogging!

As you may, or may not know, we have two fabulous bull terriers that are a major part of our household…                                               image                                                                  Macy, on the right, is a solid brindle. She just turned 6 years old on February 11th. We adopted her from a reputable breeder in Olive Branch, Mississippi just a few months after we got married. She had just turned 1 when she came to our home.

Rossi, on the left, is a dark traditional brindle. He will turn 4 years old in April and is a rescue dog that we found the summer of 2012.   image                                                                     One thing about a rescue dog… you never know what kind of puppy-hood the canine endured. Rossi is such a sweet bully, but he definitely has his issues. We’ll never know for sure how he was treated before we got him, but there are quite a few un-explained scars, weird habits and scary freak-outs that make us wonder about his previous life and the unfortunate possibility of abuse. In turn, I have a few scars to remind me to not disturb him when he’s sound asleep or touch his back legs.                             image                                                                  I say all that to say this… Rossi most certainly was not taught manners during his upbringing. Don’t get me wrong, he is super friendly to people, maybe too friendly. He has a very bad habit of jumping up on people and “kissing” them on the chin with his teeth. He has even brought blood on a few unsuspecting strangers.                                       image

When we take Macy and Rossi for walks in populated areas such as OKC’s Bricktown or into Bass Pro Shop, they are very popular. Bull terriers are such an unusual breed and people are just curious about them and want to stop, ask questions and pet them. Hubs and I are always quick to warn of his almost certain reaction to meeting new people, but it never ceases to amaze me when those people still kneel down to pet him! If we’re not holding him back, he will jump and nip. We can’t seem to break him of this habit either. (Macy, on the other hand, is so shy and skittish… she typically stands behind me while Rossi is basking in all the attention!)                                 image                                                                          I follow a great dog training blog entitled “Paws Abilities”. This morning’s post was just what I needed… click HERE to go to “Why does my dog jump on people?”. It offers some great advice, including why puppies instinctually learn the action and how to prevent it from happening, even telling how to “teach an old dog new tricks” by stopping the habit and re-training your pooch. If you are a dog owner, this entire blog is a must read for you!                                                                                    image                                                                      We will be putting their tips into practice the next time we take our rock stars out for a stroll downtown! If you see us out in public, just remember, our Rossi may try to jump up and “kiss” you, but he’s doing it out of friendliness and we’re trying to teach him better manners!                                                  image

Quiz question… can you name 4 famous bull terriers in American history? For the answer, click HERE to be taken to a post I wrote way back in 2011…

Until next time…Happy Blogging!

Let the Wars begin…

23 Sunday Feb 2014

The “Egg Wars” have begun at our church.  What is an egg war you may ask…well, it’s where all the Sunday School/Small Group Classes get together and stuff eggs for our annual Easter Egg Hung at Easter.     20140223-163100.jpg                                                  Last year our church stuffed a total of 28,000 eggs!  Rob’s and my small group stuffed the most eggs and won the “war”.    20140223-163112.jpg                                                  The winning class gets to come up with a “Fear Factor” sort of task for their group Pastor.  I can’t remember what we had ours do last year… 20140223-163122.jpg                                                  Rob and I had a system this year getting the eggs stuffed and taped.  We ended up bringing over 200 eggs to church tonight.  It would have been 220, but we bought some cheapo eggs and some of them cracked!  Plus, we miscalculated our candy and came up some short.  The process went a whole lot faster with these…                                       20140223-163136.jpg                                                       I love these and am totally obsessed with them.  Apparently they love me back… check out that heart shaped egg I found in my bag!

Until next time…Happy Blogging!
