I may be crazy… and I may not be old enough (almost 42), but the signs are there… and have been for a while now…

I’m going gray (or is it “grey”?) … and I’ve made the huge decision to embrace it.

As of today, I am nearly 2 months out from my last ‘do dye job.

This was me many, many, many years ago…

I’ve had bright, curly, yellow blonde hair from the time the follicles on my head started spitting out strands. It stayed that way until I was in middle school, then it started to change. It started to become darker and darker… finally turning into what my hair stylist at the time called “dirty dishwater blonde”. For some reason, I didn’t take that as a compliment.

In 7th grade, I finally convinced my mother to let me highlight my hair. Back then (late 80’s) highlighting meant a tight plastic cap with little circles on it and something that looked like a crochet hook. Poking a hole in the cap with the hook and grabbing/yanking the hair through was pretty painful. But we tend to suffer for beauty, right?

I’ve been highlighting/coloring my hair faithfully every 5 to 6 weeks since then. And not just blonde… I’ve been various shades of blonde, brown, red and even black (accidentally).

I’ve had purple streaks, as well as pink and teal…

I’ve paid someone else to do it and I’ve done it myself (that one turned out orange… not my proudest moment).

I’ve never been afraid to color my hair. Now, I’m not afraid to NOT color it.

Here is what I looked like the first day I decided to let my gray take over…

There isn’t a whole lot there, but it is there. I’m excited, although a little nervous to watch it come out in its full glory! Fortunately, I have an amazing hair stylist that has done my color so perfectly over the years that the dyed part of my hair nearly matches my natural roots, so there shouldn’t be that awkward demarcation line as it grows. I will be visiting the salon tomorrow for a trim and discussion about the best route to take in this journey (and no, I’m not shaving my head or getting a pixie cut. I’ve been nearly that short before…it’s not a good look on me). I will keep you updated on my progress!

Until next time…
Happy Blogging!
