Caught Up…

Now that I’m completely recovered from the Little Rock Half Marathon, it’s time to get my rear in gear and update this here blog…

Here are some pictures from my weekend in Little Rock.

First off, my solo journey to Arkansas… it snowed the entire trip…

I even ran into some pretty nasty ice just west of Ft. Smith on I-40.  Let me tell you…when I’m driving by myself long distances, I’m on edge and nervous anyway…ice and snow make it a million times worse!  I debated stopping in Ft. Smith and finding a hotel room for the night, but a very good friend of mine that is an Arkansas State Trooper assured me that the roads between Ft. Smith and home were fine.  Thankfully, he was correct!!

I got to my parents house, took a breather (well, tried… I had an allergy attack right when I got there) and attempted to go to sleep.  Which, when you can’t breathe due to allergies, is very difficult and I didn’t get much rest.

Saturday morning, after a nice, long, hot shower and some heavy duty nose medicine, I was ready to face the day!  Mom and I headed down to Little Rock for the Marathon Expo.  As I’ve mentioned before, this year’s theme was Pirates and the Expo did not disappoint in carrying out the fun…

And, here is the medal that I will receive in the mail at some point in the near future, I hope…

More about that later.

After picking up my race bib, t-shirt and other items, Mom and I headed into the Rivermarket for some lunch.  (To protect my mother’s innocence, I won’t post that picture…just know, it was funny!)  We then visited a museum downtown, and eventually ended up at the Arkansas State Fairgrounds to browse a Depression Era Glass Show that my mother was itching to see! Before heading out of Little Rock, we stopped to see where this had moved to…

Yep, that’s the start line!  So cool!

Here’s my race gear…

It was a chilly 30-something degrees and drizzly rain race morning…

It rained on us the entire race…the weather certainly wasn’t as bad as last year (Click HERE for last year’s race recap), but it was definitely cold!  It wasn’t my best race time, but it wasn’t my worst!  I crossed the finish line and was presented with this…

…no, it’s not the pretty one pictured above, but due to a labor issue at a port off California where our real medals are being held, we didn’t receive them on race day.  These are nice, though… I think they’re meant to be Christmas ornaments.  I plan to put mine in my office at work when the real one arrives.

It’s been a tradition the last 5 times I’ve raced in Little Rock to eat at The Hop, which was an old fashioned burger joint in the Rivermarket District.  This year, The Hop was sold and closed…major disappointment!  In its place, though, a new restaurant was hosting a soft opening just for race day.  They didn’t even have their order numbers yet, so this is what we got…

Also, instead of my delicious cheeseburger and fries, I ate a grilled cheese sandwich and Tomato Bisque soup, which were delicious!  The owners assured me that next year, cheeseburgers and fries would be on the menu…thank you!!

Once we were home and unloaded, Mom and I headed back out to get our post-race pedicures…but, alas, even though the nail salon owner had assured my mother a few days before that they’d be open on Sunday, the handwritten note taped to the door stated otherwise.  Another disappointment!

I headed back to OKC Monday morning in the rain, fortunately no ice or snow and made it home safely!  Until next year Little Rock!

In the meantime, I signed up for this today…

Just 257 days until race #2 for 2015!

I had a really busy day today. It started off with a doctors appointment and then lunch with The Hubs. I also stopped at Barnes and Noble to get this…

image

I can’t wait to download it to my little mp3 player and laugh all the way to the finish line in 27 days! I have nearly everything I need for the Little Rock Half Marathon…except for a good pirate themed shirt. That’s the next thing on my list!

After picking The Kid up from soccer practice, I decided to stop in and try a new coffee shop for the first time. I got a mocha…

It was okay. I prefer Starbucks. The Kid ordered his current favorite, caramel macchiato with extra caramel. He said he liked it better than Starbucks. The drinks were definitely cheaper!

Tonight,  we had dinner at church and enjoyed listening to Church on the Move’s Worship Leader and past 4Him singer Andy Chrisman.

What a great day!

Tough Decisions…

As I’m preparing for my 5th Little Rock Half Marathon (6th half marathon overall), that will take place in just 31 days (wait… what?!??! I’M SOOOO NOT READY!), I’m trying to decide if I want to listen to music for 13.1 miles as usual or listen to an audio book? I typically enjoy listening to talk radio if I’m in the car driving for long distances by myself, because it seems to make the miles go by faster… you’d think it would do the same for long distances by myself, on foot, right?

If I choose the audio book option, what book should I listen to?

There’s always this tried and true novel…
Pride & Prejudice
(source)
This is my absolute favorite book and movie. I could listen to it/read it a million times and not get tired of it.

Or, there’s this one that I haven’t read…
Unbroken
(source)
I really want to see the movie!! Is it good? I figured it would be inspirational while I’m trudging along the race course. Opinions, anyone?

Or, maybe this one…
Bossypants
(source)
I absolutely love Tina Fey! I figure this one will have me LOLing the entire time! She is one of my favorite comediennes, next to Jeanne Robertson and Kathleen Madigan.

I want something that will hold my attention for 13.1 miles. Something that will make me laugh and think and not focus on pounding the pavement.

Any recommendations for a great read, or in this case, listen? Runners…do you like listening to audio books on long runs? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

How was your weekend?  As usual, ours went by pretty fast, but it was very productive!  Here’s a peak…

I had to be at work super early this morning, but I got to witness this…
Friday Sunrise
Isn’t God amazing??  I can say one thing about Oklahoma and its flat terrain… it makes for some pretty spectacular sunrises and sunsets!

Saturday morning, The Hubs and I got up early and headed here…
Saturday morning workout
We recently re-joined the gym.  I only have 153 days until the Little Rock Half Marathon…it’s about time I started training!

That afternoon, we watched this…
Watching the Hogs take on the Aggies
We should have won, but alas…it wasn’t meant to be.  The Razorbacks lost to the Aggies 35 to 28 in overtime.  We haven’t won a conference game in 2 seasons…that’s so sad!

After the depressing loss, we put a second coat of poly on our current “Getting Crafty…” project…

Just a reminder… here is what our hallway looked like before…
Hallway Before
We’ve had that silly little cabinet/end table since we moved in.  It was always meant to be temporary, we just weren’t sure what we were going to replace it with.  How about this…
Getting Crafty...2
I’m so incredibly excited about how it turned out!  Here’s a close-up…
Getting Crafty...3
These pictures just don’t do it justice!  It turned out such a beautiful rustic red color!  It was a several layer process to get it to look like this… we brushed on the color, then wiped it off with a rag.  We then put a light coat of pecan colored stain over the red.  We let that dry, then using a rag, we put a layer of maple colored stain.  We finished with two coats of polyurethane and voila`!  The metal piece just sets it off, don’t you think?  Now we have some extra storage! Love it!

The Hubs taught Sunday School at church this morning, so be looking for a post from him later in the week!

PsOTD x 3…

(If you need help deciphering the title of this post… it’s “Pictures of The Day times 3”)

I’m finally home from my weekend in Arkansas.  It was such an eventful time with spotty internet access.  I posted Friday and Saturday, so here’s the rest starting with Sunday…

The Little Rock Marathon/Half Marathon/10k took place Sunday morning.  There were a couple new things this year that I didn’t really like.  Mainly… the “wave” starts.

Sunday1

Basically what that means is each participant is placed in a time group or “corral”.  “A Corral” being the first, fastest group, “B Corral” is the next fastest, etc.  I was in the “K Corral”, if that says anything about my speediness, or lack thereof.  At 8 am, the first group was allowed to start… a few minutes later the B corral went, then those in the C group and so on.  It was nearly an hour before the K Corral was allowed to cross the start line!  If we had started earlier than 9, we probably wouldn’t have been re-routed due to a possible severe thunderstorm that was headed our direction and I won’t even go into the controversy that was the confusion about whether the race was re-routed (which it was) or cancelled/called off (which it wasn’t, at least not by the race directors).  Maybe I’ll go into it a little… all I’ll say about it is this… in the future, listen to the communication from the actual Race Directors, not the media, aid station workers, or even police officers, they’re not always correct. The notification I got, which was directly from the Race Directors, said re-route, nothing about cancellation. The End.

Anyway… after nearly 3 ½ hours in the rain, wind, steadily dropping temperatures and almost 1 full mile missed because of the re-route, I crossed the finish line, got my medal and headed to The Hop with my parents for this…

Sunday1.2

I can’t help it, it’s a tradition!  It was so incredibly delicious, as always!

And, check this out…

Sunday2

I have now done this half marathon 4 times and I’ve never been disappointed in the experience or in the bling!  I’m already planning for next year!

By the time we finally got back to my parent’s house following the race day festivities, the weather had gotten much worse.  One of my very best friends had invited me over for dinner and if she lived further away, I wouldn’t have gone.  When I left their house around 9 pm, I had about 3 inches of solid ice on my car!  Fortunately, I made it home safely.

This is what we woke up to the next morning…

Monday1

Monday2

Needless to say, I didn’t travel back to OKC like I had planned. The roads were just too treacherous.

Monday3

Monday was spent reading, napping, watching TV, and working on this…

Tuesday2

…and playing with these…

Tuesday1

Daisy is on the left.  He (yes, he’s a boy named Daisy…don’t ask) is 14 years old.  Claire is the Cameo Persian on the right.  She will be 18 in November.  She has a breathing problem and the vet told us about 5 or 6 years ago that she wouldn’t have a very long life.  I don’t think he was looking at the same cat.

Claire

Finally, on Tuesday morning, the ice had cleared enough for me to head home.  I was so glad to reach my destination!  It was a long drive to culminate a long weekend.  I had a great time and I can’t wait to do it again next year!  I may have to build another medal display…

Medal

…this one is getting kind of full.

And finally… today, this happened…

Wednesday

One word… wow.

Until next time…Happy Blogging!
